Proper grown up hosting… Finally

After years of messing around with free hosting services from my ISP or other freebie services online, I finally forked out my hard earned cash on some proper web hosting.

With months of research into the services available and comparing features, I finally decided on GoDaddy as my new hosting company. I have been a customer of GoDaddy for almost 10 years, buying domain after domain from them, but I had been too scared to actually host any of my sites with them because... well, they were 'Big'..., and 'Foreign' ... and slightly 'too cheap'. lol.

But times have move on this then, and GoDaddy have invested a lot in their business which has boosted my confidence in them, especially the set up of there European Hosting Centre, to make us over this side of the pond feel a little bit more secure.

I felt an air of excitement when my order was complete - 'Deluxe Hosting plan to go please'. And couldn't wait to get my hands on the controls. But the excitement was short lived as I released it was going to take a while before it was all set up.  24 hours in fact. :-(.

In the meantime I did some more research into how to set up hosting of multiple domains from one hosting account. To my dismay I found a lot of negative comments about GoDaddy on line, and at one point I started to regret ordering the hostinpackage that was being set up behind the scenes, but I tried to keep a positive and open mind about it. Could it really be that bad?

So next day the excitement slowly started to build back up again once I saw the hosting account status was now at 'SETUP'. I logged in so quickly I didn't even take time to run through the 'Get Started' notes. Oh no, I had to just get in there and get my hands dirty.

I quickly got a handle of the Hosting Control Centre and set about creating some folders to hold content for my many websites. I then attempted to assign my current GoDaddy domain to one of the folders. After realising I made a mistake, I backtracked and created a fake domain name as my primary hosting domain, then assigned my real domains to each folder. Well to my surprise 'Computer says No' you can't do that! The change needed to be approved (or something like that), so there goes another few hours of time waiting for this thing to free up domain again, just so I can reuse it. :-(.

To starve of bordem, I started assigning my other available domains to folders, and this worked very quickly indeed. Why couldn't the first one have gone that smoothly? I Finally realising that it was likely to be another 24 hours waiting for my domain to free up, I decided to call it a day.

The novelty was starting to where off now (before it even really begin), and I didn't hold much hope for speedy progress the next day, but to my surprise its been plain sailing since then.

Firstly I installed wordpress, which I heard a lot about before but never really had the desire to check it out. I can't believe I deprived myself all these years. Word Press is bloody brilliant. I'm slowly getting my personal site up to scratch and its coming together nicely. And GoDaddy actually seems OK so far. So we'll see how it goes.

Only another 3 sites to migrate after this... Let's hope it goes a lot smoother.
